The bay, and what it means for where you sleep

Ao Phang Nga National Park was established in 1981 and spans approximately 154 square miles (400 square kilometers) of limestone islands, mangrove creeks and open water.[9] There is no resort strip inside it. The park is cliffs, caves and sea, and the hongs that give the bay its reputation are enclosed lagoons inside those cliffs, reached by lying flat in a kayak and paddling through dark, narrow cave passages.[10] Your room therefore sits outside the park, in the towns and on the islands around its edge.

That shapes every booking. Listed boat trips here begin with a van ride to a pier, and the piers used by the routes sit at Phuket Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Ao Po Pier.[1][2][3] A room in Phuket Town or near the Boat Lagoon keeps that first leg short. A room in Patong, Karon or Kata adds a drive right across the island before you even see the water, which matters on a morning departure.

Phuket is the natural first base. The airport is on the island, private transfers run from it to hotels here and onward to Khao Lak, and vans collect guests from hotels for the bay trips.[5][11] You can add a second base on the mainland or the Krabi shore later in the same trip, and keep the first one simple.

Phuket: piers, beaches and hotel country

There is no single hotel zone for the bay. Ao Phang Nga National Park hotels sit on both shores, and the practical question is which corner of Phuket you want. The east coast faces the bay and its marinas, so Phuket Town, Cape Panwa and the Boat Lagoon area keep the morning drive short. The west coast beaches, Patong, Karon and Kata, give you sunsets and nightlife and a longer run to the pier.

The plankton and canoe tour from this site has pickup available, with the options to check when you book.[1] Other routes gather guests from long lists of pickup locations across the island, with 13 or 15 options on two of the listed trips.[12][13] If your hotel is not covered, budget for a taxi to the marina, and check that fare before you choose a cheap room far from the coast.

Phuket fills the days around your boat trip as well. A private car with an English-speaking driver can take you to Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Karon, Promthep Cape, Nai Harn Beach, Phuket City or Patong on an itinerary you set yourself.[14] Airport transfers to and from Phuket hotels are listed from US$18 and from US$27, and the more expensive of the two is wheelchair accessible.[11][15]

Phang-nga town and Khao Lak on the mainland

The mainland side of the bay is quieter and greener. Phang-nga town sits at the head of the bay, and Khao Lak stretches along the Andaman coast to the north. Private transfers reach Khao Lak from Phuket in 2 hours and from the airport in 1.5 hours, listed from US$111 and from US$60.[4][5]

From Khao Lak, the bay is a day trip rather than a doorstep. A private or small-group Phang Nga Bay day trip runs from there at from US$142.[16] Inland, the Cheow Lan Lake trips are long days, listed at 10 - 11 hours from Krabi and 14 hours from Phuket, and Khao Sok became Thailand's 22nd national park in 1980.[17][18][19]

Accommodation on this side leans towards small guesthouses, family bungalows and low-rise resorts strung along the coast road. Evenings are gentler than in Phuket's beach towns, with village restaurants and a tide-led pace, and you will want a scooter, a taxi or a hotel shuttle to get around after dark. For travellers who want mangroves and village life alongside the beach, that trade is easy to like.

Krabi, Ao Nang and the eastern shore

Krabi is the other main base, and its hotels, guesthouses and bungalows cluster around Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara and Krabi Town. Island hopping from there is easy: a Hong Islands day trip by speedboat is listed from US$30, a longtail version from US$28, and a small-group luxury longtail trip to Koh Hong from US$51.[6][20][21]

Koh Hong also appears on Phang Nga Bay routes, including the plankton and canoe trip from this site, which stops at Ko Hong in Phang-nga Province.[1] A Krabi base does not shut you out of the bay, it simply changes your pier and your drive time, and it puts Railay and the Krabi islands within a short boat ride.[7]

For a night close to the water, look at the eastern rim of the bay. Railay is reached by boat rather than by road, and private longtail trips leave from there for the surrounding islands.[7] Koh Yao Yai and the Naka Island beach appear as stops on the six-island and speedboat routes through the bay, so day visitors from Phuket and Krabi see them too.[12][22]

from US$88

The bioluminescent plankton and sea canoe tour booked from this site is listed from US$88 and rated 4.77 from 2,619 reviews.[1]

Bungalows, guesthouses and village stays

Look for Ao Phang Nga National Park bungalows and most of what comes back sits in the towns and on the islands around the water rather than inside the park, which is protected sea, cliff and mangrove. In this part of Thailand the word bungalow is used loosely, from a fan-cooled hut with a cold shower to a polished villa with a pool. Read the photos and the recent reviews rather than the label on the listing.

The floating village of Koh Panyee is one of the most memorable stops on the bay circuit. Built entirely on stilts by Indonesian fishermen, it sits at the foot of a towering limestone cliff.[23] It appears on the plankton and canoe route from this site and on many other itineraries across the bay.[1] Life there revolves around the water, and the stop is a reminder that people have lived and worked in this bay for a long time.

When you book a room, ask the questions that matter on this coast. Is the room up a hill or a flight of steps, is there air conditioning or only a fan, how far are the nearest restaurants, and can the host arrange a taxi to the pier for an early start? The plankton and canoe tour offers free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, which gives you room to change plans after you book the room.[1]

Transfers, pickups and the boat day itself

Almost every boat day starts with a van. On the plankton and canoe tour the sequence is a pickup, a van ride, a speedboat from Phuket Boat Lagoon, stops at Panak Island, Ko Hong and James Bond Island, then the run home, and the whole day is listed as 8 hours.[1] Keep the evening after it free and do not plan a long drive.

Two details catch visitors out on the water. Ao Phang Nga National Park is a Category 3 park with a foreign adult entrance fee of 300 baht. Carry a little cash to the pier.[24] Alcohol is not allowed in Thailand's national parks, which is worth knowing before you pack a cool box for the boat.[25]

Choose flexible bookings where you can. The tour from this site offers reserve now and pay later and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.[1] Transfers on this coast are listed with the same cancellation terms, including private airport runs and the Phuket to Khao Lak drive.[4][11]

When to go, and what to book first

For a beach holiday, November to February is the ideal time to visit Phang Nga Bay.[26] Rooms and boats are in demand then, so sort both before you fly rather than gambling on arrival. If your dates fall outside that window, you will still find space, and the bay takes on a softer, greener mood in the wetter months.

The plankton is the reason many travellers choose an evening or night trip. Bioluminescent plankton in Phuket and Phang Nga Bay are caused by dinoflagellates, microscopic single-celled organisms that emit blue-green light when disturbed.[27] Some night kayak tours in the bay include a sunset paddle where you can see the plankton glowing in the water.[28] Dark, calm water is what you want, and the light shows best when you stir the surface with a paddle or a hand.

Beyond the glow, the bay rewards slow looking. Prehistoric cave paintings at Khao Khian are estimated to be around 3,000 - 5,000 years old and show animals, boats and symbols on the limestone.[29] The mangroves along the Phang-Nga coast include Rhizophora apiculata, Avicennia alba and Xylocarpus granatum among others, and a canoe through those channels is a tour in itself.[30] Choose the base that puts the things you care about closest, then let the boat days follow.

Questions people ask

Where should I stay for the bay?
Most bay trips leave from marinas on Phuket's east coast, so a hotel in Phuket Town or near the Boat Lagoon keeps the morning drive short.[1][3]
Are there hotels inside the national park?
No. The park is limestone islands, mangrove creeks and open water, so you sleep in the towns and on the islands around its edge.[9]
Is Khao Lak a good base?
Khao Lak has its own day trips into the bay, with a private or small-group Phang Nga Bay trip listed from US$142.[16] Private transfers reach it from Phuket in 2 hours.[4]
Do I need cash for the national park?
Ao Phang Nga National Park is a Category 3 park with a foreign adult entrance fee of 300 baht, so carry cash to the pier.[24]
Can I see the glowing plankton from a hotel?
The glow comes from dinoflagellates that emit blue-green light when disturbed, and some night kayak tours in the bay include a sunset paddle to watch them.[27][28]
How long should I plan for the bay?
Allow a full day for the bay itself; the plankton and canoe trip is listed as 8 hours, and a second base adds another transfer day.[1]
When should I book accommodation?
November to February is the ideal window for a beach holiday in Phang Nga Bay, so book room and boat early for those months.[26]
Are there bungalows near the bay?
Small guesthouses and bungalow-style rooms are common in the mainland towns and around Ao Nang, and they suit travellers who want a quieter evening than Phuket's beach towns.
